Feathers are an important tool for Banjo-Kazooie. In Banjo-Tooie, if Banjo and Kazooie are split up then only Kazooie can use them.

Red Feathers

Red feathers are the first type of feather you will find. In Treasure Trove Cove, if you speak to Bottles on top of the ship, he will teach you how to fly and he also gives you some red feathers to start off. If you stand on a flying pad and press "A" then you will take off and very slowly you decrease in altitude. Pressing "A" again uses your first red feather which makes Kazooie flaps her wings. You will have to flap a lot in Banjo-Kazooie to reach different places. Also pressing "B" will make Kazooie zoom straight and hit something with her beak, which can be used to knock things in place or kill flying enemies. You can carry 50 at a time without any cheats.

Gold Feathers

Gold feathers are the second type of feather you will find. In Clanker's Cavern in Clanker's stomach you can find Bottles and he will teach you about Gold feathers and give you some to start off as well. If you hold "Z" and press "C Right" then Kazooie will turn invincible and can kill almost any creature and can go through dangerous areas. For every second that you go invincible you use up a Gold feather. You can carry 10 at a time without any cheats.

Cheats

In Banjo-Kazooie, if you find Cheato in one of his 3 hidden spots then he will give you a cheat code to enter in the sandcastle in Treasure Trove Cove. His first cheat is "REDFEATHERS", which doubles the amount of red feathers you can carry from 50 to 100. His second cheat is "GOLDFEATHERS", which doubles the amount of gold feathers you can carry from 10 to 20.

In Banjo-Tooie, if you find 5 of Cheato's pages then he will give you a cheat code to enter in the pyramid in Mayahem Temple. THe cheat code he tells you is "FEATHERS", which doubles the amount of red and gold feathers you can carry.
